THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS IN SHEET HARBOUR
Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia
The commercial area of Sheet Harbour will see significant improvements thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced funding totaling $500,000 for streetscape improvements along the main commercial section of Sheet Harbour which will lead to increased economic opportunities for local residents and businesses.
“This investment will revitalize the main commercial area in Sheet Harbour and will have significant economic spin- offs for the surrounding area,” said Minister MacKay “This project demonstrates our Government’s commitment and its efforts to strengthen economic development infrastructure in rural communities and improve the quality of life for area residents.”
Funding for this project will support the community's purchase of signage, trees, pedestrian lighting and street furniture. These upgrades will be integrated into a larger municipal infrastructure initiative currently in development. The materials funded under this ACOA project will help link the community and increase pedestrian activity, while helping to create new business, tourism and cultural growth.
The Sheet Harbour Chamber of Commerce, which works to identify new economic development opportunities for the area, is leading the project. As a result of its efforts, the Community of Sheet Harbour is also contributing $343,420 to this streetscape initiative.
“The Sheet Harbour Chamber of Commerce recognizes that the area has not benefited from the strong growth of other larger urban and sub urban areas,” said Tom McInnes, President of the Sheet Harbour Chamber of Commerce. “We are pleased that ACOA is assisting in the growth and development of such a potential economic booster for the area.”
The greater community of Sheet Harbour and area has endorsed a Master Plan that, over time, would lead to improvements in both quality of life and realized economic opportunities.
ACOA’s investment is being made through the Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), which focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.
